Vioxx Recall Due to Deadly Side Effects |
by vioxxadmin On September 30, 2004, Merck & Co Inc., voluntarily recalled the widely prescribed arthritis drug Vioxx amidst evidence of side effects, such as drastically increased risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as blood clots and other cardiovascular side effects. This Vioxx recall is believed to be the most expensive drug recall in the history of the pharmaceutical industry.
The proof of Vioxx's side effects were etched in stone after the multi-centered, randomized, placebo-based, APPROVe clinical trial. The results of this study, supported the growing evidence of cardiovascular side effects mainly heart attack and stroke, after 18 months of treatment in the patients taking Vioxx compared to those given placebos. Dating back to 1996, Merck was alerted to the possibility of Vioxx's side effects. You can find a Vioxx Timeline Here.
Merck & Co, Inc., launched a sales campaign to physicians using the method called "DODGE!" Dodge Ball Vioxx was a 16-page internal marketing document Merck used to train their sales teams. This Dodge Ball technique was then used to skillfully beat around the bush when doctors inquired about rumors circulating the medical industry, predating 2001, regarding Vioxx and its side effects.
